September 7th 2013 - Westroppicana! This was another fabulous event to raise money for the Peter Westropp Memorial Trust. Unfortunately, due to a friend's wedding we were unable to attend.
This led to Andrew and I hatching a plan of our own in the form of a "gentle" cycle ride around the Lake District! This pre-Chrimble get together will help to raise money for a cause that is very close to our hearts. We have been particularly inspired by the YouTube video of all of the events so far for the PWMT (WELL worth a watch...). It is an opportunity to keep Peter's spirit very much alive whilst bringing people together in what will be a truly epic weekend.
Any support and encouragement would be greatly welcomed in the form of words and/or donations for the PWMT. Many thanks in advance and we will keep you updated! Pictures of the crew to follow. Andrew has set out details of the challenge below - Jen (Peter's cousin) x
A lot of people have heard of the Fred Whitton round, a few of you may even have done it. The official sportive is held in May when the weather is normally reasonable and there are over 16 hours of daylight. We are attempting this on the 21st December when we will have 7. We are hoping it won't snow and that at least some of the passes will have been gritted. It is 112 miles with 13,000ft of ascent over a roll call of the longest and steepest hills in the Lake District; Kirkstone, Honister, Newlands, Whinlatter and after 100 miles, the Hardknott and Wrynose with a good few others in between.
The route profile looks like something from an Advanced Life Support manual! Confidence levels of pulling this off fluctuate on a daily basis. However the 2013 Shortest Day Challenge is now an official event, there will be no backing out and every bit of support would be greatly appreciated. A fair few folk initially expressed interest in attempting the ride but have since bottled it completely.
Many thanks therefore must go to the following devotees of rules 5 and 9* who will be lining up, lights blazing and guns ready to go at 6am
- Ed "Wiggo" Gilbert
- Andy "Froomedog" Fowler
- Matt "Indurain" Oaks
- Andrew "Cavendish/Cav" Wilkinson
- "Marco Pantani" Duggan
Once again, any motivation, be it donations or words of encouragement would be awesome.Andrew "the Texan who must not be named!"
